Welcome Back to Walla Walla

Kaili was cranky as we drove to the Walla Walla airport early Friday morning, can’t blame the girl, we woke her up at 5 am. When we got to the check in counter to check our bags, our flight was about to board. Great thing about small airports I guess. The bad thing, I was hoping Kaili could get some energy out before  we hopped on the plane, no such luck. Of course once we were all settled on the plane, we were told the flight would be delayed due to the fog, so we sat with an impatient toddler on our laps. About 30 minutes later we were taxiing down the runway, and then we stopped. The fog  was back and we weren’t going anywhere. 15 minutes later we headed back to the gate, deplaned and our flight was cancelled.”Welcome to Walla Walla”, the smug flight attendant announced, I’m sure she thought she was being cute, but in the freezing cold, in the early morning with a toddler whom you woke up, that shit isn’t funny!

The next flight we could get on was Sunday morning, same flight, same early morning wake up for K-bear…can’t wait! No really, I can’t wait to go HOME!

We took advantage of having one more Saturday in WA. A  lot of the small wineries are closed during the week, along with everything on Main street. We were able to hit a few that we missed and I was impressed with all of them.

We saw horses and dogs, oh my.

The winery dog at Relic was a hyper pup, and a big one at that. Kaili really wanted to play but she wasn’t quite big enough to hold her own. I was a little more lenient with Kaili and the pup than Grandpa G.

Fingers crossed the weather cooperates for our flight tomorrow. I have a NYE party to plan, oh and a Seahawks game to watch, and grocery shopping, some cleaning to do, laundry, and wine to drink, you know the important stuff.

Off Duty Reindeer

Sunday we spent some time with Shane’s step-brother and family. It was a short visit but we always have a good time with them. All three of their kiddos were great with Kaili and she loved them right back.

We got out of the house for a few minutes to show the kids the Reindeer at Klickers. Santa must not need the extra help this year.

At the end of the day we all gathered around the TV to watch Seattle send a message to the Niners, the house was a’rockin.

Christmas eve and Christmas day were spent in pajamas. Presents were opened, food and wine were consumed and we got to play in the snow, well for a little while

From OC to Walla Walla

I have been waiting to write anything because, well nothing has really happened. That’s the life here during the winter in Walla Walla.

We left John Wayne airport early Monday morning. Kaili was a champ throughout the 2 1/2 hour flight, although it seemed a lot longer to me. We had a small layover in the Sea/Tac airport where we had a little lunch and Kaili met an elf and Santa.

Tuesday  morning I hit the local YMCA to get some exercise , the weather is SO COLD and the equipment is outdated but the little old ladies playing cards and drinking coffee in the lobby remind you that you are in a small town and then it’s all good.  We ran a few boring errands, hit 3 Rivers Winery to ship some wine home and then called it a day. See, not very exciting.

Wednesday morning we took Kaili to meet her Great Grandma and then proceeded on to some wineries.

L’Ecole is a long time favorite. It’s an old school house and has some pretty tasty wines.

The last tasting room we hit was in downtown Walla Walla. Yes there is a downtown, it’s not big but it’s promising. Charles Smith winery was quiet, had the urban loft vibe and put out some great wines….oh and there labels were nice.

Cookies & Crafts

Tomorrow we are heading up to Orange County to have an early Christmas with my fam before flying up to Washington. I was in the baking mood so I decided to try a new cookie recipe with the excuse that I could give the cookies away. These cookies turned out good. The coconut gets a little lost, it might be good with a tad of imitation coconut flavor added…next time.

I let K finger paint while I was making the cookies. I thought a festive snowflake craft might be cute.

What do you think? Doesn’t really look like a snowflake does it? Shane said it reminded him of the Israeli flag. Hmph not the outcome I was looking for.

Make This! Tandoori Cauliflower with Mint Chutney

I love browsing and buying spices, that was my favorite part of making this dish, that was also the most time consuming.

As pretty as the final product looks, all nice and whole and in it’s natural state, next time I will do things differently.

IMG_20121213_165746

Once you cut the cauliflower apart, the inside is naked from all the tandoori goodness. It seems to me it would be better to cut off the florets first then toss them in the marinade, call me crazy but that sounds like a better plan.

The mint chutney is the highlight, it’s amazing. I ended up pouring it on my salmon and my couscous. I may even go out and get some naan bread tomorrow just so I can dip in the leftovers.

This recipe comes from this blog, I found it through Pinterest. I used all ground spices except for the nutmeg, I grated that myself. I liked the idea of grinding my own spices until I started feeling lousy, so I took the easier route.

IMG_20121213_165740

Tandoori Spice Blend
2 tsp. chili (or cayenne)
1 Tbsp. cardamom (ground, or seeds)
4 Tbsp. cumin seeds
2 Tbsp. coriander seeds
½ whole nutmeg, grated
2 tsp. whole cloves
2-3 sticks cinnamon
2 Tbsp. ground turmeric
2 Tbsp. paprika

Directions:
1. Place all ingredients except for turmeric and paprika in a spice mill, mortar and pestle or coffee grinder. Grind until powdered. Add turmeric and paprika. Store in a glass jar away from light and heat. Will keep for up to six months.Tandoori Marinade

Ingredients:
4 cloves garlic
1 Tbsp. minced ginger
1 Tbsp. tandoori spice blend
juice of 1 lemon
1 tsp. sea salt
½ cup  greek yogurt

Directions:
1. In a mortar and pestle (or food processor) smash garlic and ginger into a paste. Add the tandoori spice, lemon and salt and mix until uniform. Fold in the yogurt.
2. Place the whole of cauliflower in a large bowl and spread the marinade all over, making sure to coat the bottom as well. Place in the fridge to marinate for minimum 1 hour, maximum 12.
3. Preheat oven to 400°F. On a lined baking sheet, place cauliflower and roast until tender (45-60 minutes depending on the size of the cauliflower). Garnish with cilantro leaves, lots of lemon juice and a generous drizzle of high-quality olive oil. Serve immediately with mint chutney.

Mint Chutney
Ingredients:
2 cups loosely packed mint leaves
1 cup loosely packed cilantro leaves
1 shallot, minced
½ red chili, minced (optional)
juice of 1 lime
1/4 cup yogurt
1 Tbsp. cold-pressed olive oil
a couple pinches sea salt
1 tsp. honey

Directions:
Place all ingredients in a food processor and pulse until a chunky pesto-type of sauce results. Season to taste.  Store leftovers in the fridge. Keeps for 5 days.

Remembering

Did you guys watch the  Sandy relief concert? So good huh? Unfortunately  I was forced to stop watching an hour of it when two shows started to record. Stupid old-school TiVo. I wasn’t about watch Moonshiners, people are weird for liking that show, I happened upon these pictures.

Transitioning

This past week Kaili has transitioned from two naps to one nap and I don’t like it.  First thing in the morning we go to the gym which is great because she gets out of the house and plays with her friends, this pushes her morning nap closer to 11:00. Problem is, she is only sleeping for 1 hour. NOT LONG ENOUGH. Even if she is tired later in the afternoon she wont sleep, so she is getting overly tired and waking up in the middle of the night. Why are we moving backwards? I have to find a way to lengthen her nap, any suggestions?

This weekend we drank Argentinian wine, ate Indian food and Kaili went to her first birthday party. Kaili also got a lot of play time with her doggy Rillo. Our next door neighbors Labrador has been diagnosed with throat cancer and wont be around much longer. I am trying to let Kaili get all the play time with him as she can before we leave for Wa. Rillo may not be around when we get back. This makes my heart hurt.

Twins?

I came across this article yesterday. This has never even crossed my mind, but now that I think about it, I can’t get it out of my head. Interesting thought.

Are babies born from the same egg collection considered twins?

October 20, 2010

By

I’d like to introduce and welcome one of Genea’s Scientists, Nico Foley, as our guest blogger.  Nico has a Bachelor of Science from The University of Sydney and currently works in our Andrology team. In this post Nico answers the question – “are babies born from the same egg collection considered twins?”

I was asked by a personal friend with two children through IVF, if her children are genetic matches for each other. Her youngest child was born from a frozen embryo, which was created from an egg (“oocyte”) obtained from the same oocyte collection as her eldest child. “Does this mean they are twins?” she asked me.

This is a really interesting question, as the children would indeed be called twins if they had been born together, rather than one embryo having been frozen. However, in this case they would have been fraternal twins, not identical. Fraternal twins are only called twins because they gestate together inside the uterus and are born at the same time. They are not a genetic match for each other as they did not split from the same embryo. A single embryo which splits into two separate embryos results in both embryos having the same DNA as each other and are therefore termed “identical”.

I am glad my friend asked me this, and has allowed me to share it with all of you, as it made me realise that maybe there are others out there who wonder over the science involved in IVF and what this means for their children’s lives later down the track. Do you have any scientific questions you have always wanted to ask, but don’t have a scientist on hand to chat to? Ask them here and we will do our best to help you answer them.
