Entertain Your Toddler

I have two activities that will help develop your child’s fine motor skills while entertaining them AKA keep them out of your hair.

Pipe Cleaners and the Colander

Grab a bag or five of pipe cleaners. {I found some Target in the $ bins} Then get out your trusty colander.

Show your kiddo how to put the pipe cleaners into the colander holes.

promotes- fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination. You can also sort the pipe cleaners into color groups and have your child put all the blue ones in. This will promote color recognition and following directions.

Pop Poms and the Container

While you are out getting pipe cleaners also grab a bag or five of pom pons {not the rah rah kind, the craft kind}

Save one of your empty food containers {ie. sour cream or cottage cheese} and once it’s clean cut a few holes in the lid, this is easily done with scissors.

Show your child how to put the pom poms through the holes. You can sort by color or count them as you go.

promotes- fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, listening and following directions, counting recognition and color recognition

This should give you a free few minutes so spend them wisely. Once they grow tired of the activities put them away and re-introduce in a few days.

Valentine Art

I know, it’s not even February yet. However I have like a million valentine crafts I want to do and Shane and I will be out of town when the Hallmark holiday hits, so I gotta get a move on. Last year she wasn’t quite old enough to do much so instead I did this to her.

Dr7tO

I am not sure she will put up with something like this now that she is a mature 1 1/2 year old. But don’t get me wrong, I will try.

For Valentine’s day craft #1, we did this.

I taped it, she painted it. Voila!

Alphabet Board

I spent my Tuesday making an alphabet board for K. I saw these self adhesive poster letters at Target and thought hmm, these might work nicely. Lies, they don’t stick so I had to glue them on. When I was all done I went to read the alphabet to Kaili, ABCDE….f*ck, I forgot the f*ck*ng F! And yes, I had already glued them onto the poster board. So I threw a mini temper tantrum and opened some wine. I started over the next morning, remembering the F this time.

Then I went ahead and made flash cards to go with them.

And maybe if I get the urge, I will print out pictures to put on the back. We shall see.

Kaili has become a bit demanding lately. She insisted on coloring for the majority of the day, but if I stopped moving the crayon for one second she reprimanded me. Clothes were optional, hers not mine.

Crustless Leek Quiche

I wanted to make something different for breakfast and I thought a crustless quiche was a good bet. It looked easy and I made it ahead of time so it was ready and waiting for us the next morning. Almost like having a personal chef but not.

I introduced Kaili to tray tasking while I cooked. I gave her tongs to experiment with. I had no expectation of her mastering this but she got the hang of it pretty fast. After awhile she gave up the tongs and just used her hands, smart girl.

Crustless Leek Quiche

Ingredients

1 large leek, chopped, 4 ounces after trimming
1 tablespoon butter or olive oil
3 eggs
1/2 cup cream
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
6 ounces Gruyere or Swiss Cheese, shredded

Clean the leeks well to remove any sand. Slice thinly and sauté in butter or oil until tender. Beat the eggs, cream, salt and pepper in a small bowl. Put about 3/4 of the cheese in a greased pie plate or quiche pan. Evenly spread the leeks over the cheese. Pour in the egg mixture; top with the remaining cheese. Bake at 350º for 30-35 minutes, until golden brown on top. Let stand a few minutes before slicing.

Sick, Tired and Cold

It has been so cold here, too cold. On top of that Kaili came down with a cold. One minute she was fine and then BAM she was snotty, congested and had a fever. I can feel the ick try to take over me, I really hope I can stay healthy.

Sunday football was something else huh? And how about the Golden Globes, did you watch? Since Homeland swept the awards, you need to jump on the bandwagon if you haven’t yet. I was also happy to see Girls get the win, season 2 just started back up on Sunday, watch it!

Call me a wimp but I just can’t get outside in this frigid weather. It was 34 degrees this morning, that means shoes, socks, layers and layers and I didn’t sign up for that shit. So instead of outdoor fun I have been trying my best to pull off indoor activities for K, some have been a hit and some not so much. It really depends on her mood and with this cold sometimes her mood isn’t always charming. I thought I would share a few ideas in case you find yourself with a sick toddler on a cold day.

Cookies & Crafts

Tomorrow we are heading up to Orange County to have an early Christmas with my fam before flying up to Washington. I was in the baking mood so I decided to try a new cookie recipe with the excuse that I could give the cookies away. These cookies turned out good. The coconut gets a little lost, it might be good with a tad of imitation coconut flavor added…next time.

I let K finger paint while I was making the cookies. I thought a festive snowflake craft might be cute.

What do you think? Doesn’t really look like a snowflake does it? Shane said it reminded him of the Israeli flag. Hmph not the outcome I was looking for.

The Most Exhausting December..

Oh, it’s not  December yet? Sure seems like it.

Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving. I don’t know about you but I am completely turkey’d out, all good for another year.

I am 2 gifts away from being completely done with my Christmas shopping, that feels nice. The the not so fun part is wrapping them all and with a toddler this year, oh boy I can’t wait.

Kaili is really getting enjoyment out of painting these days, however she is very particular with anything on her hands.

Operation Christmas Tree and Fatten Up The Baby

To put some LBs on the little one I hit the store and bought bagels, cream cheese, peanut butter { I made my own and didn’t love the results so store bought it is } oatmeal, ritz crackers, cheese, noodles, Alfredo sauce and  vanilla Carnation instant breakfast to add to her milk. I am stopping short of giving her whipped cream with her fruit and ice cream for dessert. Hopefully this crap food does the trick.

I also got around to making this felt Christmas tree I saw on Pinterest months ago. After  $15 and 45 minutes this is what we have.

I cut it all free hand except the star, stars are hard. I bought double sided mounting  tape and it was a waste of money because it didn’t stick to the felt, even though I was told that it would. I found some sticky velcro and the rough part holds it up just great.

There you have it, our Christmas tree for the year!

Crafty {Thanksgiving} Fun

The teacher in me comes out every so often, especially around the holidays. We got out the paints and had  fun making festive art for Thanksgiving.

After I had my fun I let Kaili have a little fun too. I mean, sharing is caring. We have an abundance of wine corks, I have no idea where they are coming from. Ahem, anyway I thought it would be a good medium for Kaili to paint with.

Gobble Gobble!

The activity went well, she did great picking up the cork and putting it back onto the plate. Now to just keep her from rubbing her hands on her head. Baby steps!
