Italy Again.

After our really fun first day we took advantage of being able to sleep in. I think it was close to 10 in the morning before we rolled out of bed and it was fantastic.

We decided today was the day to check out the Vatican. It was a hike to get there and hot as hell but such a beautiful site to see.

Along the trek we stumbled across some very good gelato. I later found out that this place is a must-try in Rome. Lucky us. I had the pistcahio and tiramisu and Shane had the chocolate wine and it was all amazingly delicious.

The rest of our day didn’t work out the way we had hoped. After seeing the Vatican we decided to walk all the way down the river to check out a restaurant. Da Meo Patacca has been around for years and one of my moms favorites from Rome. I really wanted to eat there, even if it was just a snack but once we arrived, we saw that it was closed. That was a sad part of the day. We decided to truck on back to Camp De Fiori to check out the farmers market and people watch but once we got there they were breaking it down for the day. Another disappointment.

However, we did see the most awesome police care ever. Check out this Lotus. I can only imagine the ego on Mr. officer.

After a snack we headed closer to the hotel to have a drink and some bruschetta before relaxing in our room

The evening was spent planning our next day and getting some reading and writing done. Tomorrow, skies the limit with a modest 97 degrees and 80% humidity.

Bella Roma!

After a long day of traveling  we made it to our first destination Rome, Italy. We took a recommendation and stayed at the Aberdeen Hotel. It has air conditioning and is in a good location that is all we really need.

After a good nights sleep we woke up and hit the road with the Colosseum in mind.

The weather is hot, in the high 90s with high humidity.

We walked along the river to the must see’s in Rome. Stopping first at Campo de fiori for some fresh fruit and vino.

market Campo de Fiori

After an overdue break we headed out into the heat to see Piazza Navona. Maybe not the best spot to eat lunch but the view was perfect. If you are anything like us, people watching can be just as funny as going to a comedy improv.

We ate a one of the many restaurants in the Piazza, we ordered the cheese plate and pizza margherita. It was good maybe even great but not outstanding.

After lunch we checked out the Trevi Fountain {holy tourist trap}. It is as amazing as I remember it and we will go back at night to see the real beauty!

About 6 months ago, Shane, Kaili and I along with 2 of our friends ate dinner at Il Fornio in Del Mar. Our waiter was fantastic and told us about his friend Marco who lived and worked in Rome. After telling him about our upcoming trip to Italy our waiter wrote down the restaurant his friend served at and told us to stop in for dinner. That is exactly what we did.

Spanish steps

a generous snack from Marco

Ciampini is located at the top of the Spanish steps. We sat outside and enjoyed a glass of vino while we waited to meet Marco. When I showed him the note from his buddy back in the states he was thoroughly touched and went on to tell us about how they met and the adventures they had together, it was a really awesome experience.

We decided on dinner near the Pantheon, the food was fine, nothing spectacular. I do hope to have one amazing meal before we leave. I threw one more coin into the Trevi for good measure. The day was fun filled and I can’t wait to do it all over again!

Arrivederci! Au Revoir!

Tomorrow the hubs and I  are leaving on a jet plane. In 24 hours we will be on our way to Rome, where we  will celebrate our 6 year anniversary  by frolicking through the Colosseum, throwing coins in the Trevi Fountain and sipping wine on the Spanish steps. Then we are going to head to Paris to play on the Eiffel Tower, eat Nicoise salads and check out the art at the Louvre. At the end of our solo vacation we are going to stop in on Brussels to eat  chocolate and drink some beer.

September 9, 2006

I am excited and really looking forward to some alone time with Shane. We only see each other 3 days a week and those days are shared loving our Kaili. This getaway  is going to be really good for us. However I am going to miss this face more than words can express.

My little love

As much as I will miss her, I know she will be in great hands and have so much fun with her aunt and uncle and both sets of her grandparents. I worry she will miss me but kids are resilient, I am the one who  will have the harder time.

At the end of the month our folks are flying Kaili out to London where we will meet them at the flat we are renting in Camden. I am already excited about being reunited with my sweet babe.

what? you don’t eat breakfast with your shades on?

As wonderful as mommyhood is, it doesn’t come with much time off , this trip is exactly what I need after the past few years I have had. I am a very lucky girl to be able to go on a vacation like this and I intend to enjoy every second of it.

Stay tuned for some Italian fun!

We Went to the Animal Fair, the Birds and the Beasts Were There….

Kaili and I went up to OC to visit my parents and check out the Orange County Fair, I can’t remember the last time I went.

As soon as we got through the entrance we hit the petting zoo. Goats, pigs, Llamas, miniature donkeys and 90 degree weather, who wouldn’t love it? Kaili was a little timid and not terribly sure about being left on the ground with these “gigantic” animals. At first she was enjoying a real life animal adventure.

And then she wasn’t sure anymore.

After a lunch of corn dogs and gyros we let Kaili play with the water area. She approached it with caution but then went full force getting completely soaked. She also met a little friend, she seemed to think this little boys nipple was a button, just kept pushing it. How embarrassing.

Kaili was a trooper and ran out of gas about 4 hours in but so did my dad, so it all worked out.

A Real Vacation

Our vacation date is closing in and besides being super excited I am also anxious, a little nervous and  realizing how much there is to think about this time around. In the past, meaning pre-Kaili, trips were a breeze to go on a blast to plan.

Our, meaning Shane and my last real  vacation was 4 years ago when we went to Beijing for the 2008 Paralympics. Since then we have taken a few getaways to Santa Barbara, Arizona and Washington but the past few years we have been stuck close to home while going through our fertility treatments. Once Kaili came we have been on the go, but as all of you who have kids know, a vacation with a young baby is not a real vacation. Gone are the days of sleeping in late, lounging on the beach, late night dining and dancing til dawn…and that is fine. But once in a while I think parents need to escape, enjoy each others company…alone and recharge their batteries. That is exactly what I..ahem, we plan to do.

This time we have 9 glorious days to do whatever we want in Rome and Paris. We might even dance til dawn because  we will be able to sleep in as long as we like, how amazing does that sound?  Packing for a long trip like this calls for some thinking ahead. There are a lot of things that are easy to grab while you are at your destination but others are just easier to bring with, like an outlet converter and face paint { GO USA } and the obvious red while and blue gear for the Paralympics. Where does one buy face paint anyhow?

Since we will be leaving the little Miss with family while we play in Europe {THANK YOU} I am realizing how much more preparation needs to be done before we leave. There are things I didn’t even think about like filling out a medical release form and leaving medicine dosages. I know I will go overboard on information for her caretakers but I don’t care. I spent my entire pregnancy being told to not worry but my gut was right 99% of the time, so I am going to go information overload for my own piece of mind.

Our parents are flying with Kaili to London where we will meet them for the second leg of our vacation. So I also need to get  Kaili’s suitcase packed with her passport inside so it wont be forgotten and make sure all the little things are ready for them to go before we walk out the door. What all that is, I am not quite sure yet, my head is spinning.

All I know is this trip is overdue and I can’t wait to escape with my husband for alone time. I also can’t wait to spend an amazing time in London with our family but the best part of it all will be watching the Paralympics and cheering for our friend in his quests for two gold medals.

Drinking in the Hills

We spent a fun day visiting a couple of wineries this past Saturday. Our good friend Kristi drove from Arizona for a quick visit and we knew where we wanted to take her.

Cordiano Winery sits perfectly perched in the hills of San Pasqual Valley and the atmosphere is priceless. We sat, ate pizza, drank wine and watched Kaili walk around  and around making new friends, with humans and dogs. If you are ever in the neighborhood, stop in for a visit.

not everyone drinks wine at a winery

Kaili has gotten this walking thing down pretty well now. She likes to get a toy and then walk up and down the hallway with it in her hands babbling to herself. You can really see the confidence oozing and it wont be long before she is running. I tried to get her to walk her “puppy” down the hall but getting her to do what I want while the camera is out doesn’t work very well.

How Does Your Garden Grow?

Mine grows like crap. Every year Shane and I head to the garden store and pick up the essentials to start our container garden and every year I end up with the same result, the plants either die or get infested by caterpillars. Every year I end up back at the garden store asking someone to help me find a product that will keep my plants alive and the caterpillars dead. This year I was hopeful, my Serrano chili’s took off and they are thriving, although they aren’t very spicy. My tomato plants are looking a little rough but I was so excited about turning my home-grown heirloom tomatoes into an amazing Caprese salad. Well guess what?

stupid caterpillar ruined everything

This is what I found when I finally picked the tomato, I think I cried. So once I again I am wondering why I do this every year. If you have a container garden that thrives, could you please tell me what I am doing wrong?

Olympic Goals and Soccer Dreams

Olympic Training Center

Saturday we went out to the Olympic training center in Chula Vista, aka Wag’s home. It was buzzing with BMX Olympians and loads of their fans to watch the Olympic trials. I wasn’t even aware that BMX was a sport in the Olympics, shows you what I know.

It was a pretty big ordeal and fun to see. There were skydivers and the band Buck-O-Nine played in between the trials.

Incoming

We didn’t get to stay to see the finals because the little Miss needed dinner and things were running behind schedule. 19-year-old Connor Fields took home the trophy and landed a spot on the US Olympic team and will compete in London next month.

Futures so bright!

On Sunday or should I say Father’s day Shane, Kaili and I drove up to Irvine. Shane got to spend the day with his babe and I took my parents to see the Galaxy take on Portland.

I love soccer. Even though the Galaxy hasn’t been on a winning streak lately they did pull out a win this time. Half of the team is either injured or playing on their national team in Europe so it was mostly second string players. Beckham showed up and  played very well but it was our goalie who saved the game.

Back to Father’s day. Kaili made Shane a little gift, don’t you love it?

Happy Father’s Day!

A Day at the Beach

Crystal Cove beach is located between Laguna Beach and Newport beach. Tucked away from the hustle and bustle stands a perfect little beach with a nostalgic twist. The historic district as it’s known is a beautiful beach with cottages dotted along the sand. Most of the action takes place at the Beachcomber cafe which serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. There motto is “where every night is Saturday night and Saturday night is New Year’s eve.”

Cafe from the beach

My dad is a member of the Crystal Cove gallery where his paintings are always on display. He was asked to be a visiting artist for a few days down by the beach. My mom, Kaili and I decided to join him for a day, his cottage wasn’t roomy enough for us all to sleep in but it was perfect for a home base.

We enjoyed a delicious lunch at the cafe and then headed out to the beach. The sun wasn’t much of a team player today but it is June after all.

Hi birdies

I left with a list of all the cottage names and prices for a stay and I must say it’s very reasonable. I want to live in this cute little retro world for a few days.

La Villa {Little Italy}

Last Sunday was the Mission Federal ArtWalk in Little Italy. Every year my dad is there with all of his amazing Plen Air paintings on display. If you haven’t had a chance to check out his art, please do so here.

We took the Trolley down there to check out the scene and say hi to my dad. {but really we went for the food, shh!} If you haven’t been to Little Italy in San Diego, the main street is lined with amazing restaurants. If you are part of our family you will know that  decisions don’t come easily. So when Shane spotted a place we hadn’t been to, he made an executive decision, that’s where we would be eating lunch. We were the first ones there but the place was packed when we left.

La Villa Restaurant

We ordered a few different wood-fired pizzas, a salad and a sandwich. Everyone was very pleased with what they had. I think it was some the best pizza I have had outside of Europe, delish.

Caprese Sandwich
Chino Farms Salad
Margherita Pizza with Prosciutto
Spicy Calabrese with broccolini, goat cheese, ramps and chili’s
Margherita Pizza with Burrata

The Burrata on my pizza was the richest, creamiest, most amazing cheese. I tried to find some at a market down there without luck. Once I do find some I am going to recreate this pizza.

Kaili approves with our choice of restaurant

The Little Italy ArtWalk happens every year on the last weekend of April, aka Kaili’s birthday weekend! So plan ahead and take at trip to Itlay without leaving the country. Stop by Steve Kell’s booth to say Hi, then head over to La Villa for a lunch. { get the Margherita pizza with Burrata! }
