18 Month Dr. Visit

Kaili is underweight and it’s affecting her height, crud! She eats like a bird, so now I have to make sure her birdseed is packed with calories. I wonder if she would like her fries with mayonnaise?

She weighs a whopping 19 lbs but in her defense she did just get over a bad cold and she still has a lingering cough. The Dr. said I can give her Zyrtec once a day to help. Then I stumbled upon this article and now my paranoia is at an elevated level, I am about to go sanitize all her pacifiers. I will admit I lack in that department because they don’t leave her room but that is no excuse.

We didn’t talk much about her speech since I have already taken the steps to get her assessed on my own. Her evaluation is next week. I had a packet of a gazillion papers to fill out that all asked the same questions in different ways. The questions were geared towards early Autism symptoms <— I am not sure that is the word I am looking for  but you get my drift, right?  The only 18- month developmental skill she doesn’t have is language.

Our Dr. said she wasn’t concerned with her lack of speech since her understanding was just fine, Kaili likes to show off!

We are scheduled to go back in 7 weeks for a weight check. I am hoping loads of mashed potatoes, stuffing and cuisine de Walla Walla will do the trick!

Kaili only had 2 vaccinations left to get and we threw in a flu shot, then I left the room. Nothing can make a mothers’ heartbreak like hearing your child screaming from the other end of a building. Shane said the gentle nurse stabbed her pretty hard and there was blood. I am glad I missed it, I may have smacked her. Luckily that is it until her Kindergarten shots!

Can You Hear What I Hear?

Kaili is now 18 months and still has no real words, although she does pretty much say “yes” . Can she understand? Absolutely. She can follow 3 step instructions and shows empathy, a trait she obviously gets from me!

I told myself that I would look into First  5 San Diego  to get her a speech assessment if she wasn’t talking by 18 months. Well here we are. First 5 is a  program that helps children 0-5 years old in all areas, health, learning, family, for free. They have arranged for us to come in and have Kaili observed by a speech therapist next month. They also wanted  her to get her ears checked, so that is what we did yesterday. Shane and I really didn’t think there was anything wrong with her hearing but hey, it was free, why not double check. They also threw in a vision test for good measure.

The outcome? She passed both the hearing and vision tests as we expected. So, her lack of words has nothing to do with her hearing. I know it’s not a huge deal that she isn’t talking yet, and I know that some children start talking later on but you know, with her birth story and all, I have to {for my own sanity} have her checked out.

After the testing, I took her down to La Jolla for a beach picnic. Why? Because that is what I like to do and that is what I did after a lot of my IVF tests. Plus it was a beautiful day.

However my  daughter doesn’t seem to appreciate the beach as much as I do. She doesn’t like the sand on her feet or her hands for that matter and she isn’t fond of the water. In time, I know she will soon love it and I will have to drag her home. I hope!

Obligatory Pumpkin Patch Photos

Saturday we headed out to Bates Nut Farm to do the pumpkin patch thing. Kaili wore her Seahawks cheerleader costume and actually kept her hair in pigtails for me.

I took her into the petting zoo. When I was a little older than Kaili, my parents took me to a petting zoo where I was attacked my a goat for the food I was holding, luckily I survived. Kaili almost had a similar experience when she nearly got head butted by a greedy goat. Fun was had by all.

Kaili roamed around the pumpkin patch and got a kick out the pumpkins that were twice her size. We let her pick out one pumpkin and then we hit the road. We had wine tasting to do.

Kaili has become a pro in the toddler -wine -taster- side kick role. She loves meeting new people and checking out new places, which is good because we are heading to Paso Robles for a wine-vacation next week.We hit up Vineyards winery where we sat on the patio, sipped wine and listened to music. Then we went to Vesper winery where we sat on the patio and sipped wine. Do you see a pattern here?

I guess next up is carving the pumpkins, that is why we got one right? Oh and the pumpkin seeds, I think that is my favorite part.

Getting Crafty

Halfway through October and it’s 90 degrees outside. I would have no clue that Halloween is around the corner if it weren’t for the tacky  decorations strewed along my neighbors houses. Ok Fall (disguising yourself as Summer) with your freakish weather, I give in, you win.

I am not a huge fan of Halloween but I do get excited about all the fun crafts there are to do with the kids. I  dug  into my teaching supply boxes for a couple of activities to do with Kaili. Well if I am being honest, the hand and footprint ghosts is really an activity for the adults to do but we just say it’s a kids crafts because it’s cute, a keepsake if you will.

I gave K bear a piece of paper, some Halloween stickers, showed her how to peel of the backing and let her do her thing.

Stickers =Concentration and fine motor skills. After she stuck them on she pulled them off and that is fine, but we were left with an empty canvas. So sorry, no picture for you!

The hand and footprint ghosts turned out super cute. I took her outside, mixed a little dish soap with white paint ( comes right off with water ) and once I got one footprint done, I put her foot into a bucket of water and rinsed it off. Rinse , paint, repeat. Simple!

Spook-Tacular!

While she was doing her craft I sang ? told?  Kaili the Five Little Pumpkins poem and she laughed at me. WTF?

I also made a failed recipe of edible Pumpkin play dough, it is in the trash now. Boo! But I have some yummy recipes to share with you soon to make up for the botched play dough.

“Sleep Fight” Phase

Please tell me it’s just the cold+ toe injury that is making my daughter fight sleep, paleeeze! . Kaili has always welcomed her beauty sleep and if she wasn’t asleep by the time her head hit the mattress, she would play quietly until she conked out. But this past week has been a whole other ballgame, she cries and cries and then throws her pacifier out of the crib because she is smart enough to know I will come give it to her. This goes on for quite awhile until she gives in. I will stand strong but it sure is tough.

I know at this age she is beginning to realize how much fun it is being awake and that she want’s to “assert her independence”. Is she telling me she is ready for 1 nap a day? Sometimes I think yes but then afternoon hits and she rubs her eyes and starts the cranky pants dance. So then I think, nope, two naps it is.

It’s probably just the cold right?

Funky Cold

Well let’s see, where did I leave off? Kaili’s health has made a huge improvement over the past couple of days, her fever is gone, throwing up is done and her toe bled on it’s own which has made it look a million times better. After the week we had she ended up with a stupid cold!

Friday, our friend Randy from Portland ( you can follow his wife’s blog here) came into town for a visit. We, and a few of our friends went to Slaters 50/50 for an early dinner.

This was the first time Kaili really ate anything, Mac n cheese, french fries and ketchup, I’ll take it!

Kaili found Randy’s IPad

We spent Sunday sitting around, chatting, sipping Bloody Mary’s and laughing at K bear. Oh and watching football!

Under the Weather

The past few days haven’t been the greatest. Well actually Tuesday started out just fine. Kaili and I went down to the Bay for some excercise  and a picnic lunch.

enjoying pita and hummus

Kaili enjoyed playing in the sand and on the playground. It was a beautiful day.

Once we were back home, we headed out into the backyard for some kitty cat time. As Kaili was trying to pull a towel off the back of one the patio chairs she unfortunately managed to pull the entire chair over onto her.  I didn’t get there in time and the chair landed on her toe. She was in pain and her whole toenail instantly turned purple

Once the crying subsided, I tried icing it as much as I could, but she wasn’t having it. I was more concerned than she was, she was handling the pain fine, or so I thought. I decided to call the nurse to make sure she didn’t need to be checked out. The nurse suggested to see if Kaili could settle down for a nap, if so then she would probably be fine but if not to head to urgent care. Kaili was exhausted and napped her normal afternoon nap with no problem.

When dinner rolled around she was fussy and I couldn’t get her to eat more than a few bites and she fought bedtime, that is unusual. I knew she must be in pain and I gave her Advil but it didn’t seem to help. It is heartbreaking to know your child is in pain and there is nothing you can do about it, absolutely heartbreaking! By 9pm we both finally got some sleep. That is until midnight when I was woken up by her screaming. As soon as I opened her door I knew what had happened. She was covered, no actually drenched in vomit. Once everything was in the wash and she had taken a bath I put her on the couch to watch Barney while I called the after hours nurse. I was urged to take her to the ER. So we packed up and headed to Children’s hospital at 1:00 AM.

I was concerned that the vomiting was linked to her hurt toe but the nurse at the hospital didn’t think they were connected. They gave Kaili some a magic drug that stopped her vomiting and said they weren’t going to drain the blood in her toe at that time, so we could head home but we needed to see her Pediatrician in the next day or two.

We were both wiped by the time we got home and she went right to sleep. I hoped she would sleep until 8 or 9 to catch up on the missed hours but nope, she was up at 5 and then for good at 7. Once awake, she developed a fever. It started as a low grade fever but started climbing as the day went on.

Kaili came with me to the gym on Monday where she was in their daycare while I worked out. Shane thought, and I hoped that she caught something there and it was just a coincidence that it hit her the same day as her injury. But in the back of my mind I worried that it was somehow linked to the trauma of her toe or even worse an infection in her body.

The Dr. agreed with me that the vomiting could very well be her body reacting to the injury but she wasn’t convinced the fever was too. She gave me the option of doing blood tests to check for an infection or wait a few days to see what happens with the fever. I opted for the second option, wait and see. Her opinion was she would be just fine and wouldn’t be surprised if she woke up with a cough or congestion in the next day. But she said we were to come back if her fever got over 103 and or if the fever wasn’t gone in three days.

Kaili woke up the next morning with a fever, nasal congestion and sneezing. So maybe this is all a coincidence  and it’s just a bad bad cold. I haven’t been able to get her to eat or drink anything and I am forcing water, Gatorade and apple juice down her throat just to keep her from becoming dehydrated. This sucks!

This is what her toe looks like today, terrible picture but she won’t let me touch her foot.

She still has a temperature and that is my main concern right now. Fingers crossed things start looking up tomorrow!

17 Months

Baby K turned 17 months last Sunday. We celebrated with a trip up to the OC so Kaili could see all of her family. But first we had to say good morning to Senna.

Kaili and I met the family at the Irvine spectrum where we enjoyed lunch. Kaili’s favorite part of going there is the pet store as sad as they are.

Kaili + Grandma

After lunch, Kaili was entertained by her uncle. She hasn’t seen much of him but she took to him immediately.

And then she wowed us with her piano skills, musical prodigy in the making?

My mom is leaving in a couple of weeks on another trip to Bolivia and beyond. She will be gone through the holidays so I got a present early.

It’s even signed! I love it.

We finished the evening at Salt Creek Grill, all the food was delicious!

Back to Reality

What an amazing trip we just had. 4 countries, 20 days, 2 medals and Coldplay! I think I am home sick from it all. I miss waking up in a new place, sightseeing, eating and drinking our way through cities and just being out of the day-to-day routine.  And although leaving Kaili for those first 10 days was the hardest thing I have ever done and tears were shed on the way to the airport, I was prepared and so was everyone watching her.  I shook it off and enjoyed myself and I don’t regret it one bit. I think every couple needs to get away if they have the opportunity, marriage comes first. My biggest concern with leaving her was how it would affect her, would she have separation anxiety? Would she resent me? I worried for nothing because she did just fine and when we got to London it the same as it had always been, that was the best feeling ever. This vacation was greatly needed and it was better than I expected! But all good things must come to an end and reality slowly creeps back around. Today is that day.

Shane’s folks left back to Washington early this morning and Shane went back to Ventura for work. It’s just me and Kaili for the day. She seems to be back on the US time schedule as she slept through the night last night. I on the other hand woke up a few times disoriented. I didn’t know where I was or what room Kaili was in. It was really strange, I stood in our bedroom trying to figure out what door would get me to the bathroom and what door would lead me to her.

I guess it’s time to start thinking about a few things. In the near future I need to get rid of Kaili’s nighttime pacifier, I am dreading that. Also, I want to introduce her to the potty. She will turn 17 months at the end of September.

Kaili with Big Bird

I am also concerned with her speech, or lack there of. She has her own language, she does say “yes” and she understands anything we say. But other than that she isn’t talking. I am not overly concerned since no one else seems to be but I wont lie that in the back of my head I wonder if it has something to do with her  birth. If she isn’t talking by 18 months than it’s time for another opinion. Other than that she is right on cue with her age.  Her hand seems just fine, she has an awesome grip so I don’t think we will have any complications with it. I think she will be right handed anyway, even though Shane really wants her to follow in his footsteps and be a lefty.
